Perception, Communication, & Teamwork

As I mentioned a couple of days ago, I had the opportunity to facilate some activites with the staff at my school. It was such a blast! Though I was nervous, I thought that things went really well- better than I expected! To be honest, I feel most at home in groups and I love to facilitate and observe the dynamics that spark between people.

Though I used theses activites for adults, they can be easily accomodated to use in smaller groups and with your students.

Keep reading to get the agenda, directions, and materials that you need to faciliate these activitites....

I actually stumbled upon the ZOOM book at one of my favorite websites, wilderdom. I took a chance at doing this activity even though I had never seen the book and I am so glad that I did. This activity really helped the staff see different communicaiton styles, different perspectives of the same event, and led the conversation into one in which we talked about self-care in frustration moments. Do you shut down? Do you work harder? Do you take the lead?

Basically, the book zooms out from one scene to the next connecting them all and ending at a picture of a dot (representing earth) in the middle of space. The group is asked to put these scenes together by only communicating what is on thier card and without the ability to look at any others. By words alone can this acitivity happen successfuly.

I have done this particular activty before while faciliating in a progam called Smart Girl, Inc. (which is an amazing program by the way!) and loved seeing the literal and emotional move from competition to teamwork. Basically, the group comes into this thinking they are playing four way tug of war. You allow them to work from thier assumptions until they realize that they can score more points if they work together instead of against each other. Just like in the education system! Collaboration is key.
