I believe I can fly... with my superhero cape!

Somewhere in the pinterest craziness of my everyday life, I was inspired to do a superhero theme with a second grade boys small group that I ran this year. The boys in the group had problems with behavior- such as talking out in the middle of class and just being all around ancy.

Every session we did, I created a patch to indicate what the boys had learned about a new skill or concept. For example, we read "My Mouth is a Volcano" and they received the Volcano patch. These patches would all come together and be "stitched" onto their superhero cape.

These patches were also a great incentive and small group management technique. The boys couldn't simply receive a patch for being in group, they also had to be a good participator. They had to be like superheroes.

At our final group session, the boys were "caped" and received the final product! It was such a great way to remember all the activities we did and the lessons we learned together. As we "stitched" their patches on, the boys told me what they really liked about each session.

Want to make your own cape?
Here's all that you need...

plastic table covers
scissors
elastic bands
hole punch
pen/sharpie

Here is the video I used for inspiration...

....and here are the amazing results and three proud kiddos:

I plan on creating an actual Superhero Behavior Small Group Curriculum this summer and using it again. I found that the kids were super involved and focused in this group and that the idea of striving to be more like superheroes was something they could grasp.. and got excited about!
